The mission of the VFW is to “Honor the dead by helping the living” through veterans’ service, community service, national security and a strong national defense. The Willis Polhemus Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9215 Upper Nyack, NY is dedicated to the support of United States military veterans, their families, and our local community. United Hospice is proud to be joined service and solidarity with this community of veterans as we strive together to assist those in need when it matters most.
VFW Post 9215 seeks to champion those who have sacrificed so much for this country. They fiercely honor the memory of those who gave their lives for their country and provide assistance to their families. They cultivate a feeling of camaraderie, respect, and support among their ranks while also extending their strength, honor, and kindness to the greater community.
United Hospice has been so fortunate to have generous support and representation from VFW Post 9215 for decades. Their annual donations have been earmarked specifically for veteran programming. In addition, members have made themselves available to attend pinning ceremonies for fellow veterans receiving United Hospice care and have been a key part of our efforts to honor community veterans for decades. It is both moving and meaningful to be able to recognize and honor their dedication to community.
United Hospice would like to also recognize the service and compassion of VFW Post 9215 Commander Damien Shea and Senior Vice Commander Al Acunto. Damien served in the United States Marine Corps, leaving as a Corporal after 6 years. Al retired as a Chief Warrant Officer. Together, they have led several initiatives including an annual Veteran’s Day ceremony for the Public, an annual Veteran’s Golf Outing that has completely sold out every year and quite notably – the Recycled Rides program which locates donation of used cars, refurbishes them and gifts each car to a veteran in need. To date eighteen cars have changed the lives of worthy Veterans. Currently there are two automobiles in the process.
United Hospice is grateful for the leadership and years of unwavering commitment to the veterans in hospice care throughout our community.
